The Kingdom of the Bee Hummingbird

More than 80 nature preserves have been created since the Cuban Revolution in 1959, covering almost 25 per cent of the island's territory. The Humboldt National Park, in the eastern part of Cuba, has unique mountainous cloud forests, plateaus, rivers, mangrove swamps, coastal forests and coral reefs.

Cuba's fauna has plenty of dwarfs and few giants. More frog species can be found than mammal species and yet: a fascinating ensemble without equal in the archipelago of the Greater Antilles.

With few more than 2 inches the bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. Like the little colibri the tiny Monte Iberia Eleuth belongs to the many endemic and often also endangered species. The Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt, in the eastern part of Cuba, has unique mountainous cloud forests, plateaus, rivers, mangrove swamps, coastal forests and coral reefs. In 2001, the Humboldt National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
